Yesterday
was the hottest day of the year - so
far ! There was loads of sunshine,
but from time to time some clouds
came along and it seemed dim for a
while. The BBC claimed, on the 6
O'clock news that the temperature
had peaked at 34.7° C, and one of my
outside thermometer was saying 34.3°
C at 3:42pm when it seemed to be the
hottest. At the same time my bedroom
was up to 32.6° C. It was almost
midnight when the temperature had
dropped enough to be noticed.
I think it was still 20° C at
7am this morning, rather than the 19°
C shown in the forecast. The good news
is that it definitely feels cooler
today, although it may well still
reach 24° C this afternoon. A lot of
light rain is forecast for the
morning, and maybe the start of the
afternoon. So far I have seen one
light shower that didn't seem to last
more than 20 minutes. It was enough to
make the garden look wet, but if that
is the pattern for this morning I
might be able to walk through the park
in the dry. Update: The BBC have added
a lightning bolt for 2pm today ! They
like their forecasts of lightning,but
they very rarely happen. Tomorrow sees
a return to sunshine and then sunny
spells, but the temperature may only
peak at 24° C.
I hate to admit it, but
yesterday's heat did not invigorate
me, but did quite the opposite. Maybe
it was the humidity, or the times when
the sun was hidden behind cloud, or
just my general state of health, but
unlike in the hot summer of 2020, I
felt no urge to go for a very long
walk, or even a medium walk.
It only took 3 days, but after
I had finished writing yesterday, and
before I had my usual rest, I finally
finished some laundry that it had
started 2 days ago. When originally
started I expected to finish the same
day, but neglected it after a couple
of rinses (it included a small towel,
and towels always need lots of
rinsing). The day before yesterday it
just felt too hot for plunging my
hands, even protected by rubber
gloves, in hot water.
My hand were feeling extra
sweaty in those runner gloves, and it
didn't help that they were just a
little too tight. I managed to get a
little pimple come up on the back of
my hand where I had sweated too much
in those tight rubber gloves.
Yesterday I did the final rinses in
just lukewarm water, and I did it all
bare handed. It was probably around
11am when I hung the hand towel, a
single t-shirt and a pair of
underpants hanging on the washing like
to dry in the sun.
With that job done I had my
usual post writing rest, and I laid on
my bed reading with a desk fan blowing
over me. I was probably approaching
midday when I decided to have a
shower. Although I still didn't fancy
a walk with no purpose, otherwise
known as exercise, I did fancy
stretching my leg, and going for a
walk to Poundstretcher. There were a
few things I wanted, although none
were urgent needs.
It was actually rather nice
walking in the midday sun, or what
should have been sun. I think it was
one of the several times when a cloud
came along and blocked out the sun for
10 or 20 minutes. It still felt very
hot, and I had to mop my brow a couple
of times along the way (and also in
the shop). It must be some built in
masochism, but it felt good to
overcome the heat, and do something
useful.
On top of my (mental) shopping
list was big kitchen towel. I was
hoping to get a three pack of the
biggest they do, but they only had
single rolls. However, I think the big
rolls were bigger than the rolls in
the 3 packs, and so I bought three
single rolls. I had hoped they might
have had some sugar free fizzy drinks
- they did, but only two types, and
neither of them were as great as I
hoped. I bought two of each of what
they did have. I also bought a 6 pack
of Quavers.
I also bought some food. It was
the usual 5 pack of instant noodles, a
couple of packets of sugar free
biscuits, and a most definitely not
sugar free "Aero" chocolate bar. I
have become incredibly good at eating
similar stuff sparingly, and although
technically impossible, it seems a bit
of chocolate actually reduces my blood
sugar level. I have been too scared to
see if that still happens recently,
but yesterday I had 3 or 4 little
blocks of that chocolate. I very much
enjoyed it, and the magic seemed to
work again.
It was a sweaty walk home,
despite not carrying any heavy
shopping like I usually do. It was
getting sweat in my eyes, and that can
be quite painful. It was possibly only
5 ℃ cooler indoors, but only
downstairs, but it felt nice getting
out of the sun. Back up in my bedroom
it was still roasting. Once I had put
the shopping away I had some lunch. It
was rice crackers, sliced cheese and
Korean kimchi. It was the first time I
had opened the jar I had bought from
Tesco as much as a week or more ago.
It was a different make to the last
kimchi I found in Tesco, and
definitely superior. Even so, I still
can't make up my mind if I really like
it or not.
After lunch I don't think I did
any more than mostly laying on my bed
reading and dozing. As 6pm approached
I went down into the kitchen to
prepare my dinner. It was basically a
chicken salad, but the salad itself
was a bit sparse. I had a few
tomatoes, and a few mini peppers. The
only green stuff was watercress. That
is nice, but mainly only in small
amounts, and it was only a small
amount I had.
A little later I had two small
bags of Quavers. They are so light and
fluffy that they only have a very
small amount of sugar in them, and I
think they hardly have any calories. I
probably ate them towards the end of
the news - the London news segment.
The whole lot seemed doom and gloom,
and once again I wonder why I have
started watching it again - probably
because there is nothing else on at
the time.
The news was followed by Star
Trek: The New Generation (replacing
Voyager that has now finished), and
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Neither
were essential viewing, but better
than nothing. The last finished at
9pm, and as usual I took my book to
read on my bed. Before I relaxed I
weighed myself. I hadn't eaten a lot
during the day, but I had drunk a lot
- mostly chilled water. My weight
seemed a fair bit higher than the
previous couple of nights.
I was hoping I would be peeing
a lot in the night to rid myself of
the excess water. There were a few
times when it seemed rather slow to
get back to sleep, but once asleep I
seemed to sleep OK. I don't recall
getting up to pee very often, and it
seemed like I was peeing smaller
quantities than usual. maybe a fair
bit of water loss was as sweat, but
even that was not enough, and this
morning it seemed like my weight had
gone up by about 600gm. I was very
sure it was not from eating too much,
or the wrong stuff.
I know I dreamed a lot last
night, but I can remember nothing of
any dreams except for one which
another dream of being at work. I
think I was in that dream when I woke
up, and got up. I went for a pee, as
usual, and maybe it was a little
bigger than some in the night, but not
the "gallons and gallons" expected. I
didn't even have a poo, and so, as
mentioned above, my weight had jumped
a full 600gm.
The proof that I did not each
much yesterday was my blood glucose
readings. They were the lowest for
probably years. The Contour meter read
an amazing 6.9mmol/l. The GloucoRX
meter read even lower at 6.7mmol/l.
The new Contour plus meter let me
down, but only a little bit. It read
7.1mmol/l - only a little bit higher
than the other two, but still a
fantastic figure. That made for an
average of 6.9mmol/l, and that is my
lowest average all year, although
prior to the start of this month the
average has been messed up by the
persistent higher readings of that
bloody Sinocare meter.
The main thing for today is my
usual Wednesday lunchtime drink in The
Jolly Farmers. I doubt that I will be
joined by Kevin today, but it is not
impossible. The main thing on this
occasion is that it will be a cooler
walk through the park, and possibly a
wet walk too. Although cooler, it
still feels like it will be too warm
for a coat, and I may just let myself
get soaked - and hopefully drying
quite quickly once out of the rain.
I almost forgot this photo
taken at 15:42 yesterday.
It shows the temperature in my
bedroom. It was 32.6 ℃. That was
pretty hot and sweaty !
The outdoor temperature shows 34.3 ℃.
I thought that was not accurate
because the outdoor sensor may have
had a bit of sun of it (although it
didn't seem so at the time). On the
weather section of the 6 O'clock news
they said the peak in London was 34.7
℃. Maybe my measurement of 34.3 ℃ was
not that wrong after all.
The other thing show is the forecast
for rain, and today it is dull, and we
have had 2 or maybe 3 fairly short
light showers, and there may well be
many more to come.
